Invisalign: How does it compare to traditional braces?

Invisalign is recognized as the industry-leading solution for achieving a straighter smile through an innovative and discrete approach. Compared to traditional braces, Invisalign allows patients to avoid the look and discomfort of large bulky brackets and wires. Both traditional braces and Invisalign work by the same principles of applying pressure to the teeth to shift them into proper alignment over time,  but Invisalign stands out due to its clear aligners that are virtually invisible.

Invisalign treatment involves using multiple sets of these clear aligners, which are changed out regularly to guide your teeth into proper alignment. This method not only provides effective results but also allows for a more flexible and convenient treatment experience tailored to your unique dental needs.

The biggest draw to Invisalign is that like the name implies, the clear aligners are invisible and discreet compared to traditional metal braces. Invisalign also employs a version of metal brackets called attachments. Attachments are small bumps placed on a select number of teeth that help anchor the aligners to the teeth. This applies force in the correct direction to straighten the teeth. These attachments are made of tooth-colored composite material, so they blend in with teeth well. Because of these features, Invisalign is perfect for patients who want to improve misaligned teeth in a discreet way.

While both types of orthodontic treatment are pricey, patients can expect that Invisalign will cost more than braces. This is due to the fact that the clear aligners are custom made to fit each patient’s smile, and multiple sets need to be manufactured to achieve the gradual movement of teeth over time. Depending on the complexity and length of the treatment, some patients require more trays than others, leading to a large variation in cost from patient to patient.

Patients will be happy to hear that on average, Invisalign treatment is faster than traditional braces. Braces treatment typically lasts 1-3 years, but treatment length is ultimately determined by the complexity of the case. Invisalign lasts an average of a year to 18 months. Invisalign treatment is often faster because once a patient has achieved the necessary movement, the current set of aligners can be switched out for the next set. With braces, in person appointments are needed to make wire adjustments.

While Invisalign may sound more convenient than braces, patient compliance is extremely important in ensuring the treatment works. Invisalign must be worn at least 20 hours a day for it to be effective and timely. Oral hygiene is especially important with the aligners, as they must be taken out to eat or drink anything except water. Managing this can be especially difficult for younger patients, so traditional braces are often considered the best treatment plan for younger age groups or patients who feel such compliance will be difficult.

Traditional braces are known for painful side effects. The metal brackets and wires can often irritate the insides of cheeks, and monthly appointments to tighten and adjust the braces can result in intense pain for a few days as the teeth accommodate to the new positioning. On the other hand, Invisalign aligners are smooth plastic and won’t irritate the soft tissues of the mouth as much. And while they can be uncomfortable the first few days of treatment as teeth get used to the pressure of the movement, patients do not experience much noticeable pain as the treatment progresses because the aligners utilize small, continuous movements over time.

During Invisalign treatment, it is especially important to practice good oral hygiene. The saliva in your mouth is important because it neutralizes acids from food that could harm teeth, and helps eliminate germs and bacteria that cause gum disease and cavities. Since the aligners cover the teeth, it is harder to get the benefits of saliva. Therefore, brushing teeth twice daily and flossing to eliminate food debris and bacteria is essential. This also includes cleaning the mouth thoroughly with water after eating and drinking, because putting the aligners on with food debris on the teeth can result in staining. Due to this increased need for mindfulness of oral hygiene, Invisalign may not be suitable for all patients.
